I was super excited to see comedian, Jimmy O. Yang in person at a recent Just For Laugh show.

Who is Jimmy O. Yang?

Jimmy O. Yang is a Hong Kong-born American actor, stand-up comedian, and writer. As an actor, he is best known for starring as Jian-Yang in the HBO comedy series Silicon Valley, as Dr. Chan Kaifang in the Netflix comedy series Space Force, and as Josh Lin in the Netflix romantic comedy film Love Hard. How was it?

I really enjoyed his latest movie, Love Hard. (My Review) His show definitely did not let me down. It’s wonderful to see this comedian branch out and become successful.

Book Review: Cogheart

Summary

Lily’s father was missing during an airship accident. She was placed under the care of her housekeeper, who immediately took over the house and the “mechanicals” in the house.

In this version of Victorian England, mechanicals and mechanicals existed as a part of human life. Sadly, most were disrespectful of these beings just because they were made of gears and bolts. Despite the fact that they had feelings and preferences, many disposed of them as they wanted to. However, Lily’s father was the opposite and so was Lily.

That was why her family mechanimal fox, Malkin, would risk everything to give Lily, the last letter from her father before the accident…

What was the letter about? Who had tried to Lily her father? Why were those scary men after her?

Conclusion

This was such an entertaining story! There were some slightly scary bits about surgery and amputation. Overall, a great story for folks who enjoy some adventure and mystery.

What is Crudo?

Vendor Feature: Kaonta Chicken

This was the first time for me to have such a complete Filipino meal! Thank you, Kaonta Chicken!

Who Is Kaonta Chicken?

1) When and why did you start your business?

I started grilling inasal at home in January of 2021.

Chicken inasal, commonly known simply as inasal, is a variant of the Filipino chicken dish known as lechon manok. It is chicken marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, coconut vinegar and annatto, then grilled over hot coals while basted with the marinade. Wikipedia

The business itself started after my mother requested for me to cook inasal for dinner, as she just got out of the hospital. I prepared and served our family dinner that night, but before that I snapped a picture of the food and posted it on my Instagram story. Within a few hours, a bunch of my friends began asking what restaurant we were at. To the shock of many, I said it was my home. My sister also took a photo and posted it to her Instagram. Without me knowing, she began taking orders from her coworkers!

That was when I first purchased to-go boxes and sauce containers. That was the first step of how KaonTa Chicken came into fruition. To be honest, I did not plan on making this recipe into a business, but this is what it has become and I am quite grateful for the massive support that I have received.

2) What was your background?

2) I studied culinary arts at VCC in 2018, and in the following years I worked at several different places. Having that experience from both school and working different jobs, gave me the basis for KaonTa Chicken. There is a lot more to be learned in this industry, and I hope that the coming lessons will bring KaonTa Chicken to another level.

3) What is special about your products?

I only serve chicken, as I do want to obtain Halal certification in the future. The menu and the dishes itself are made to not be exotic, but something that people can identify with. Comfort food is what the concept of KaonTa Chicken is. The other items on the menu came mostly with quick thinking. For example the Seitan Inasal came from when a large order from a factory came, they ordered around 100 lunches, and then they said they have 28 vegetarian/vegan co-workers. I had to think about what would be a way to create a vegetarian version of the original Chicken Inasal, but not take away the essence of the dish. That was how the Gluten Skewers was born.

Netflix Series: Tomorrow

Summary

A couple of Grim Reapers were assigned to monitor the leaps of the living beings’ negative energy. As the numbers rise, it was a sign that could lead to suicidal thoughts. One day, a young man was walking along the bridge and saw a man wanting to jump off. As he was trying to save this man, the Grim Reapers appeared as humans and tried to tell the young man to leave. The young man refused to leave because he believed that he could save that older man. Then, they both slipped and fell over…..

The young man sat up and discovered that he was in a coma! Temporarily, his soul was separated from his body, so he was assigned a new body, identity and even a new job! He was a Grim Reaper! What?!

Conclusion

I got extremely emotional on so many occasions. There were many triggers related to suicide, sexual harassment, slavery, war and much more. This was definitely not for sensitive viewers.

I love kombucha! There are some brands that are stronger in taste and not for everyone. However, when I tried Culture Craft, I knew this was great for newcomers to try! Thank you, Culture Craft!

Who is Culture Craft?

1) Why and when did you start your business?

Culture Craft Kombucha was founded in 2015 by North Vancouver entrepreneur and chef Dan Larsen, who decided to turn his attention from a 15-year grind in the back of house at renowned restaurants like La Quercia, Café Medina, Sonora Resort and Bishop’s and combine his relationships with local farmers and purveyors and passion for food and drink into building his own boutique brand of kombucha.

Admittedly, his motivation behind the creation of Culture Craft Kombucha was also one of a personal quest to improve his own health.

2) What was your background?

“While working as a chef I was tired, wired and burned out, had neglected my health and found myself with a seriously compromised digestive system,” he says. His future mother-in-law introduced him to the nutritional benefits of kombucha, which can aid in reproducing beneficial gut bacteria heavily depleted from stress, toxins and a poor-quality diet to create a more powerful digestive response and strengthen the symbiotic relationship shared between mind, body and digestive system.

Not to mention that the nutritionally ‘alive’ functional beverage contains healthy organic acids, antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes and B vitamins — all of which have the potential to help boost energy, mood and immunity and promote detoxification.

It also allows him to provide his young son Shay with a healthy, delicious probiotic drink that is nutrient dense, low in sugar — making it a far superior beverage to pop or juice — and made with local, organic, preservative- and pesticide-free ingredients that Shay recognizes.

3) What is special about your products?

When it comes to Kombucha, Dan relies on the principle of ‘Fresh is Best’.

“So many mass-market kombucha brands are flooding the market with product that can take weeks or even months before it hits the grocery store shelves, and during that time, kombucha has a tendency to become more acidic and take on a vinegary flavour that can be unpleasant and off-putting,” says Dan. “We want to help people avoid buying far-from-fresh kombucha. It’s our mission to shorten the distribution chain and show consumers who are thirsty for change that only the freshest will do.”

Dan is hands-on every step of the way, from recipe creation and sourcing all the seaonally inspired ingredients in each flavour to brewing and bottling the finished product. His favourite part of the business is sourcing fresh, organic produce from some of BC’s best farms to elevate the flavour of each brew, all while supporting local food systems.

4) What else do you want to share?

In a nod to his Danish heritage, Dan kept the Scandinavian principles of ‘Hygge’ — a sense of simplicity, coziness and instantly comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or wellbeing — front of mind when envisioning all aspects of the Culture Craft Kombucha brand. And it’s these same principles with which he conducts his business and nurtures his relationships with local farmers, purveyors, clients and consumers.
