Vendor Feature: De Mello Coffee

I love coffee! What about you?

Have you ever tried coffee skin care? I am very thankful for De Mello Coffee for sending me these items!

Who is De Mello Coffee?

1) Who is De Mello Coffee?

Our adventure stretches back to 2007 when our co-founder Felix and Won Cha met specialty coffee in Australia. Cultivating a passion for coffee, they moved to Canada and opened a local coffee shop and a small roaster in Midtown Toronto, where it became a community of coffee lovers enjoying the warmth and the creativity that comes from our specialty coffee.

2) What was their background?

The experience at De Mello cafe inspired Felix and Won to expand the business into a full-fledged coffee roastery in pursuit of creating coffee of the highest quality that holds a unique interpretation to each of its own. From a local casual coffee to an award-winning coffee, we are proud of our De Mello crew–from producers to baristas– and the quality product we make as a team to deliver the best coffee experience to you and the community.

3) What is special about your products?

We strive to promote coffee culture by introducing coffee in a fun, vibrant, and diverse way. Our community and our relationships define the De Mello coffee culture; without trust and transparency throughout the De Mello fraternity–from producers to customers–a true De Mello coffee cannot be brewed.”

4) Some fun fact might be… our products other than coffee is pretty clever and well designed.

Also, the baby tiger character on our items somewhat looks like our dog “Paco” and the character from NOMNOM series is drawn after Felix, our co-founder.

Vendor Feature: Culture Craft

I love kombucha! There are some brands that are stronger in taste and not for everyone. However, when I tried Culture Craft, I knew this was great for newcomers to try! Thank you, Culture Craft!

Who is Culture Craft?

1) Why and when did you start your business?

Culture Craft Kombucha was founded in 2015 by North Vancouver entrepreneur and chef Dan Larsen, who decided to turn his attention from a 15-year grind in the back of house at renowned restaurants like La Quercia, Café Medina, Sonora Resort and Bishop’s and combine his relationships with local farmers and purveyors and passion for food and drink into building his own boutique brand of kombucha.

Admittedly, his motivation behind the creation of Culture Craft Kombucha was also one of a personal quest to improve his own health.

2) What was your background?

“While working as a chef I was tired, wired and burned out, had neglected my health and found myself with a seriously compromised digestive system,” he says. His future mother-in-law introduced him to the nutritional benefits of kombucha, which can aid in reproducing beneficial gut bacteria heavily depleted from stress, toxins and a poor-quality diet to create a more powerful digestive response and strengthen the symbiotic relationship shared between mind, body and digestive system.

Not to mention that the nutritionally ‘alive’ functional beverage contains healthy organic acids, antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes and B vitamins — all of which have the potential to help boost energy, mood and immunity and promote detoxification.

It also allows him to provide his young son Shay with a healthy, delicious probiotic drink that is nutrient dense, low in sugar — making it a far superior beverage to pop or juice — and made with local, organic, preservative- and pesticide-free ingredients that Shay recognizes.

3) What is special about your products?

When it comes to Kombucha, Dan relies on the principle of ‘Fresh is Best’.

“So many mass-market kombucha brands are flooding the market with product that can take weeks or even months before it hits the grocery store shelves, and during that time, kombucha has a tendency to become more acidic and take on a vinegary flavour that can be unpleasant and off-putting,” says Dan. “We want to help people avoid buying far-from-fresh kombucha. It’s our mission to shorten the distribution chain and show consumers who are thirsty for change that only the freshest will do.”

Dan is hands-on every step of the way, from recipe creation and sourcing all the seaonally inspired ingredients in each flavour to brewing and bottling the finished product. His favourite part of the business is sourcing fresh, organic produce from some of BC’s best farms to elevate the flavour of each brew, all while supporting local food systems.

4) What else do you want to share?

In a nod to his Danish heritage, Dan kept the Scandinavian principles of ‘Hygge’ — a sense of simplicity, coziness and instantly comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or wellbeing — front of mind when envisioning all aspects of the Culture Craft Kombucha brand. And it’s these same principles with which he conducts his business and nurtures his relationships with local farmers, purveyors, clients and consumers.

Wai Spa’s Body Contouring Treatment

It’s been over two years since I had a body contouring treatment. These treatments are usually uncomfortable while going through with it. After the treatment, muscles are usually extremely sore. But, the body takes you for it! Thank you, Wai Spa for this treat!

This treatment is a two-part procedure. First part is the manual massage that incorporates Kyung Rak technique along with regular technique. This helps to loosen up the muscles and starts the lymphatic drainage. The alternating sensations of soreness and relaxation helps to prepare the body for the second part.

Second part involves the R.F. machine.

The Radio Frequency Machine:

“Radiofrequency (RF) therapy, also called radiofrequency skin tightening, is a nonsurgical method of tightening your skin.

The procedure involves using energy waves to heat the deep layer of your skin known as your dermis. This heat stimulates the production of collagen.

RF therapy may help tighten loose skin on your body by stimulating the production of collagen.

A 2017 studyfound that 24 of the 25 people who underwent 5 to 8 sessions of RF therapy sessions saw an improvement in their body shape. Twenty-three people were happy with their results.”— Health Line

Conclusion

After a few hours, I definitely felt sore and tired. According to their other clients, better sleep and bowel movements are awaiting…. Excellent!

Vendor Feature: Clawed Candles

These candles are super fragrant and has an interesting shape! Thanks, Clawed Candles!

1) Why and when did you start your business?

I started this business in Dec. 2021, it started off solely because I wanted to make Christmas gifts for everyone. I gave the Peewee Candles as Christmas gifts & everyone encouraged me to start selling it, so I thought I’d try it out & when I received such positive reviews on the Peewees I decided to start a business to bring more laughter to everyone’s day! I also truly enjoyed making candles & making everyone smile when they smelled a scent or saw a cute/unique candle.

2) What was your background?

I still am currently a home-based nail technician so it was a nice change to start selling products!

3) What is unique about your products?

All the candles I create are made from 100% natural soy wax so that everyone can enjoy them! And as far as I can tell, the Peewee Candle is a one of a kind in Vancouver! All scents are also combined scents created by me.

4) Anything else you want to share?

I am now focusing on expanding the candle business to incorporate solely unique shapes & scents for everyone to enjoy! I will soon be launching an anime themed candle set too 😁.

Vendor Feature: Yum Ice Freeze

What an interesting concept! This was such a cool concept to freeze dry candy for a new texture!

Who Is Yum Ice?

1)    Why and when did you start your business?

Why:

–       We don’t really like to eat candies in their regular forms

–       Since we have our candy we enjoyed it so much and would love other people to taste, enjoy and share this  fun experience as well

When:

–       Our business started around July 2021 and we were the very first store in Vancouver selling freeze dried products before anyone else

2) What was your background?

  1. The business has 2 owners. Myself and my girlfriend (Aurelia)
  2. For myself, I was still an international students at the time and my background was in hospitality industry and worked as a server during college so I’m certified in both Food Safe and Serving It Rights. Which is a great experience to help us start this business right. To ensure sanitation and quality control always at highest level. My parents are business owners so I knew that I wanted to have a business of my own one day and this business was the least expected but fit right in what I was looking for.
  1. For Aurelia, her background is actually in fashion design as she is so passionate in the industry. Luckily, this background of her also brings the designing side of the business into play. All the cute logo design, packaging designs were all through her approval and as you can see they are super cute and really represent what Yum Ice is all about. – Share your favourite freeze dried sweets with your favourite loved ones.

3) Some interesting facts about your product?

  1. Some of them take up a full 24 hours to reach the quality that we want them to turn out. We never take shortcut to sell under-qualified products.
  2. In perfect storage conditions, our products can last 3 year +, but as a measure for best quality we recommend only 1 year.
  3. Also I will add the process of freeze dry because I think it’s really interesting to hear how it’s made 😊

The freeze-drying process is called sublimation, and it consists of three stages. The first stage takes 2 hours of freezing at -23 Celsius, the second stage takes 2 hours of vacuum freezing and the last stage takes up to 22 hours of high vacuum drying at 67 Celsius. This whole process completely removes water from the product, then as soon as the water touches the freezing surface, it becomes ice. The ice then turns from solid to vapor by skipping a liquid phase. Through this process, texture and taste are drastically altered in a positive way.

4) Finally, anything else you would like to share?

– Our plan is to have up to 52 or more flavours of freeze dried products in our store. This will include: candies, ice-cream, vegan friendly, cakes, beverages, etc. It’s a big dream for us to really be the #1 brand for any thing freeze-dried in Canada. We will add more once we can expand the production line and hopefully a cute, exotic design walk-in store.
