Vendor Feature: E. A. R. Wax Candles

I love to support young entrepreneurs! Check out this brand new line of candles by E. A. R. Wax Candles

Who is E. A. R. Wax Candles?

I started my business in June because my aunt got me a candle making kit and I have always been a very experimental child and really loved candles!

I am in grade seven.

I have been doing hip hop for 6 years and jazz for less than a year. I love to teach play and babysit kids!

Something interesting is that all of my scents are unique to my brand such as “fruit loops” and “grape soda”!

The name E. A. R. Wax Candles came mostly from my name Emy Ann Rosen. Also, my aunt who has the same initials started a business with a similar name, so I got to keep the brand alive!

Vendor Feature: True Soapery

The instant I opened my lovely gift from True Soapery, the whole room was filled with the lovely scent of the soaps inside! Thank you, True Soapery!

Who is True Soapery?

1) Why and when did you start your business?

I started making soap by accident.

I set out to formulate a lotion. I have always suffered with dry skin and then about five years ago eczema appeared on my hands. I wasn’t happy about the prospect of using steroidal creams long term, so I set out to discover what I could do to formulate a lotion specific to my needs.

Being a crafter and a gardener plus loving to cook set the stage for my quest. I began to read about the ingredients used to formulate such lotions and along the way soapmaking kept coming up. First bar of soap I made, I was hooked! A fellow soapmaker says it’s baking without the calories!

True Soapery is a new company only a baby less than a year as an official business. However, I’ve been formulating for five to six years.

2) What was your background?

I have no science background to speak of, but love to create. I always believe that the more wholesome anything is, it is better for you including skincare ….the saying of if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it is kind of true here as well. Everyone should know in today’s market WHAT is in the product we put on our skin.

3) What is special about your products?

True Soapery products are made with olive oil cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil. Plus, there maybe the addition of coconut cream or oat milk depending on which bar you purchase. Ultimately, all ingredients are listed for products and have all been CNF listed through Health Canada.

4) What else do you want share?

The sunflower lotion is the one I first formulated and still use today. Hope to bring more to the line! I’m a fussy girl and tend to test them for a long while before they make the product line…

Vendor Feature: Kove Ocean Foods

Sometimes a little sprinkle of joy makes all the difference! That’s exactly what I was thinking when I was trying out Kove Ocean Foods’ Sea Spice. Thank you for the gift!

Who is Kove Ocean Foods?

1) Why and when did you start your business?

About one year into building seaweed farms and starting the process of growing seaweed at scale (in partnership with local First Nations), our founding partners at Cascadia Seaweed determined that the highest and best value for the seaweed that we are growing, would be ideal to develop our own brand of consumer food products. Eventually, that was when I joined as a partner and how our CPG food brand Kove was born.

2) Next, what was your background?

Previous to Cascadia, I was running a charity that I helped co-found with my best friend, Ruben’s Shoes Society. When Covid hit, our work came to a stand-still as all of our events were cancelled or postponed. Ultimately, all of my fundraising activities came to a halt. I had nothing but time on my hands. I focused on my health, running and meditating for hours. Soon, this opportunity came to me via a text message one day in May 2020.

3) Interesting facts about your product?

The foods we eat have a significant impact on the health of the planet. At Kove, we’re developing the tastiest, most delicious foods made with seaweed grown in the pristine waters of the Pacific Ocean while creating economic opportunities for First Nations in British Columbia. SEA SPICE is our signature seaweed seasoning done in a furikake style and is made with Sugar Kelp flakes grown by Cascadia Seaweed. Seaweed is incredibly healthy for the planet as it grows in the ocean so there is no demand on land or fresh water. Furthermore, as it grows seaweed provides essential nutrients to ocean life and helps to create healthy habitat and promote biodiversity.

Sea Spice is incredibly flavourful and acts like a natural organic flavour enhancer, enhancing the taste of everything it is added to. We currently have our original flavour available and will be launching 2 additional flavours, Sriracha and Lemon, very soon. People are loving it on avocado toast, ramen, and poke bowls, it takes popcorn to new heights and is an easy salad dressing when you combine sea spice with your favourite go-to olive oil. It is also great on eggs, steamed rice, and absolutely awesome with potatoes either mashed or baked!

4) Finally, anything else you would like to share?

Our 3 pillars:

Good for the planet: Carbon capturing and oxygen producing; seaweed is a regenerative powerhouse for the planet.

Good for the community: We work closely with First Nations in British Columbia (Vancouver Island) to help us build seaweed farms and cultivate our seaweed in ways that are climate and people positive. We currently have 7 regenerative farms in 5 different territories.

Good for you: Ancient cultures knew what we are only rediscovering; seaweed is nutrient rich and incredibly healthy to eat. The sustainable way to snack #trulygood #weareseaweed

Vendor Feature: Think Soap

Thank you, Think Soap, for my gift. I love the names and the ingredients of these soaps.

Who Is Think Soap?

1) Why and when did you start this business?

When I decided to relocate from my home in historic Montreal to Vancouver’s beautiful west coast city, I did not know what a significant change this would be!

I was drawn to the lifestyle and the people who have made sustainability and zero-waste living a priority. I was keen to reduce my carbon footprint and soon started looking into living zero-waste by reducing the packaging that I was bringing home and buying local products.

I was reading and researching more and more, and once I started digging deeper into household cleaning products with all the plastic packaging and toxic ingredients, I know that a change was needed!

In early 2017, I found an article highlighting the adverse effects of shower gels and industrial soaps on our health and environment. This inspired me to begin creating soap for my personal use and stopped purchasing commercial products at the grocery.

As I became more conscious of my packaging consumption, the more it bothered me to be around such waste, I decided to step away from my career to begin fresh with new challenges.

With Th!nk Soap, I have created a product and a brand aligned with my values. I am proud to offer healthy products for locally produced skin and sold in sustainable packaging.

2) What is your background?

I worked as an optician for 9 years in France.
In 2007, I moved to Montreal to start a new life and worked as Store Manager in a convenience store for 6 years.
Then I decide to join Value Village Team as a Sales Director in one of the biggest stores in Montreal.
In February 2016, I moved in Vancouver and start to work at HomeSense as associate. At this time, I didn’t speak English at all so I couldn’t manage people. In December 2016, I start the Manager in Training Program and fully became assistant manager in my role in April 2017.
In Spring 2018, I decide to quit my job and jump in this wonderful adventure that is soap making.

3) What is special about your product?
Because I love to travel, when I start to sell my soaps, I decided to name them after a city I visited. I would choose a scent that reminded me my trip in this city. It was absolutely subjective and totally personal. My customers could relate or not.
With Covid, I stopped to travel, but lots of my customers asked me why I didn’t have this or that city. So, I asked them to think about it, to tell me what their city smells for them. I asked which scent reminds them their city.
Sometimes, after a couple of days or weeks, I got an answer, and then I tried to create a new soap. That’s why now I have around 60 different soaps I make in rotation.

My best sellers are
Provence | Lavender
New York | Barber Shop
Paris | Champagne
Amsterdam | Hipster Spirit
Vancouver | Sand & Sea.

4) Finally, anything else you would like to share?

Over my first year selling my soaps at craft markets, I had a lot of requests for Solid Shampoo. So, I made some research and I found a French recipe of Solid Shampoo. They are affordable, they have no plastique, no chemicals and they last. I sell them only onsite at markets, but I will introduce them on my shop online on my website.

Also, for the soaps, I created some labels with messages like Happy Birthday, or Best Mum, Best Dad, Best Sister … The customer can choose any label and put it on any available soap. It makes a nice gift.

These candles are super fragrant and has an interesting shape! Thanks, Clawed Candles!

1) Why and when did you start your business?

I started this business in Dec. 2021, it started off solely because I wanted to make Christmas gifts for everyone. I gave the Peewee Candles as Christmas gifts & everyone encouraged me to start selling it, so I thought I’d try it out & when I received such positive reviews on the Peewees I decided to start a business to bring more laughter to everyone’s day! I also truly enjoyed making candles & making everyone smile when they smelled a scent or saw a cute/unique candle.

2) What was your background?

I still am currently a home-based nail technician so it was a nice change to start selling products!

3) What is unique about your products?

All the candles I create are made from 100% natural soy wax so that everyone can enjoy them! And as far as I can tell, the Peewee Candle is a one of a kind in Vancouver! All scents are also combined scents created by me.
