Who Is Myfunvelope?

1) When and why did you start your business?

I started my business five years ago. Soon after having my twins. I was a mom of six with five preschoolers. I started searching for activities to keep the other tree busy while I took care of the babies, and came upon craft subscriptions. When I was not able to find an affordable option for Canadian families I decided to start my own.

2) What was your background?

I took disability studies and worked with adults with disabilities. Then, as a teachers aid.

3) Some interesting facts about your product?

First and foremost, it’s affordable. I take time to package in a way that I can ship cheaper then a parcel and pass the savings onto the customer.

HOW IT WORKS

Vendor Feature: East Village Soap Company

Thank you East Village Soap Company for sending me these soaps!

East Village Soap is locally operated by a husband and wife team, that strives to create all natural skin loving soaps that contain pure aromatherapy oils to calm, refresh, and rejuvenate your senses.  We wanted to create something that is great for your skin, smells amazing, is uniquely crafted, and absolutely beautiful.

We use the old fashioned cold process method of soap making.  All our bars are made by hand in small batches and cured for 4-6 weeks before being sold.  We never use synthetic fragrances or colors in any of our soaps, and they are colored with clays and herbs from nature.

We strive to shop locally for all our ingredients and support local businesses. Foraging is a passion we have and its important to us to use what nature has surrounded us with. We love to look for ingredients we can infuse into oils and use in our soaps and on to give them that extra boost of goodness!

Message From The Owner

Hi, I’m Aileen Leong, and I live in Calgary Alberta Canada in the neighborhood of East Village.

I’ve always suffered from sensitive skin and have two kids with eczema. With this began my journey into natural soap.

I bought my first bar of natural soap on a whim and the rest was history.  When I first began cold process soap making I was amazed at how much better moisture, lather and hardness you could get from a naturally made bar. Very quickly I saw improvements in our skin when using natural soap. After almost a year of testing recipes we have developed the formula we now use and love.

Nature plays a large part in my soap designs, and I try to incorporate  locally sourced ingredients as much as possible. It is important to me to use scents and colors in my soap that only come from nature and are not synthetic. My family has had many fun adventures foraging for botanicals in our local community to put on and in our soaps.

I love making art that I can incorporate into something that is also amazing for the skin.

I hope to spread that love to you through an awesome product that your skin will absolutely crave ❤

Fun Fact: I used to work as a nurse in a hospice before I had kids and decided to stay home with them. I took a couple soap classes and absolutely fell in love with the whole process.

Vendor Feature: Goodness Graze

Thank you Goodness Graze for their amazing grazing box!

Who Is Goodness Graze?

1) Why and when did you start your business?

The passion for graze started long before I knew what the term ‘graze’ or ‘charcuterie’ meant. Putting together an arrangement of food for loved ones, and seeing their reactions to the spread always brought feelings of joy. The conversations while connecting over snacks and nibbles have always left lingering feelings of nostalgia in the mind.

It’s the feeling you get when family and friends come together, where you share the highs and lows of life’s journey, where you celebrate and embrace. It was the craving for that exact feeling which paved the way for the goodness graze journey. Goodness graze is a combination of my love for food and togetherness.

2) So,what was your background?

I have a background in psychology.

3) Also, interesting facts about your product

We strive to be an eco friendly company & use products that are biodegradable, compostable & recyclable only. We believe in supporting small businesses & source our products from local businesses in BC; we love building connections with them.

4) Finally, anything else you would like to share?

Each box is full of surprises and when possible we try to add a personalized touch that resonates with you (be it a specific cheese or chocolate that reminds you of your childhood). 😊

Vendor Feature: Oscar & Molly Art Co.

Thank you, Krista of Oscar & Molly Art Co., for this unique piece of art!

Who Is Oscar & Molly Art Co.?

1) Why and when did you start your business?

My business came about somewhat accidentally. I made some pebble art gifts for coaches and others in our lives, and suddenly started to get requests for more.

I also had been collecting beautiful pieces of driftwood and decided I needed to do something with them, so I bought myself a versatool and started the journey of self-taught pyrography.

I learned that driftwood is unpredictable unlike wood that is prepped and purchased for pyrography, so there has been a learning curve and a journey in letting go of perfectionism – as each driftwood piece is distinctly unique. Friends started to see these pieces, and loved them. Their popularity spread by word of mouth.

Just recently, the past 5 months, I decided I am having so much fun with my creative side that I should market my products, join some Canada-wide auction groups, markets, online fairs. I also donate items for fundraisers in Canada and the US. Also, I have recently begun collaborating with other businesses.

2) What was your background?

My background: Bachelor of Education, taught high school for many years, also Career Counselor at the high school. I worked with a non-profit, The PREP Program, in Calgary, as a teacher for children with Down Syndrome – and loved it!!! This brought out my creative side again. I have spent many years as an entrepreneur: Personal Growth Coach https://kristahillcoaching.com, Brain Health Practitioner https://peakbrainhealth.com, and was subbing high school initially as I was getting my start.

I couldn’t shake my passion for teaching art… subbing the art class was my most regular gig. So I kept up with my art on the side. I was furthering my education and skills through online courses and having so much fun creating! I grew up with a grandma as an art teacher, author of art instruction books and showcased gallery artist. My mom is an artist as well – primarily acrylics and oils. I have always been on this path.

3) Some interesting facts about your product!

My product: pebbles and driftwood are collected by me, as I walk along the shorelines of Vancouver Island exploring all the natural beauty we are surrounded by. I only remove driftwood from above the high-tide line as I respect all Forestry and Natural Resources bylaws. I also clean and treat all pieces before working with them. Beaches are beautiful but not clean (lots of little critters love the beaches too).

4) Also, anything else you would like to share?

I donate $2 from each purchase to the BCSPCA. I love my rescue pups! Molly is a pug cross rescue from Mexico. Max is a pug from the BCSPCA. Oscar, (of Oscar & Molly Art Co) was also a rescue (he was rehomed to us). I create Inspirational and Sassy Driftwood Expressions; pebble art; Whimsical Urban Watercolour and Ink; Whimsical Botanicals (watercolour and ink typically); sea glass art (also collected on the shores of Vancouver Island); mini wood houses; barnwood signs; and the odd acrylic painting. I also teach individual and small group art classes for kids/teens. Once things open up a bit more, I will also be offering paint nites for kids, and paint nites for adults.

Vendor Feature: Lethal Lites Candles

Thank you, Leah of Lethal Lites Candles for making me this amazing hand-made soy candle! She is a breast cancer survivor and 20 surgeries in 20 years! She is an inspiration at us! So glad to hear that she is healthy now.

Who Is Lethal Lites Candles?

1) Why and when did you start your business?

I had always made gifts for my friends and family. Candle making was one of my favourites. In 2016, I filled my moms beautiful teacups with soy wax so they had a use. Instead of collecting dust. I made a few more for friends. Then I started making candles as a part time gig in 2018.

2) What was your background?

I was off work for 20 years. When I returned to work, I got a job as a junior researcher in UX, as I didn’t want to go back to being a Pharmaceutical rep. When Covid hit, I was out of work- because I didn’t have enough experience to go out on my own. So, I was making candles for friends and family at Christmas 2020- and I posted some on Facebook Marketplace. It went crazy. I had like 4000 views. It was crazy. I couldn’t keep up. So, I decided that I would try to make this into a business.

3) Some interesting facts about your product?

The best part of my job is sourcing cool containers. I go to estate sales, vintage shopping, thrift stores. You name it, I fill it.
I also do refills and I often fill people’s own containers that are meaningful to them.

4) Finally, anything else you would like to share:)

I called my business Lethal Lites because, back when I was like 18 years old- I was a DJ for like 8 months!! LOL! It was so fun.

Vendor Feature: Zuri And Emma

These look like desserts! Thank you Zuri & Emma for this lovely box of beauty products!

Who Is Zuri & Emma?

1) Why and when did you start your business?

Zuri & Emma was born seven years ago out of the love for our girls, and the beauty and joy of creating beautiful baby accessories. Blessed to call Metro Vancouver our home, we shared many memorable moments creating and sharing our custom pieces with families who also enjoyed seeing their little ones decked out in cute patterns, lace, florals, and even bow ties!

As our season of life changes with the beauty of motherhood, so has Zuri & Emma. With the same passion for creativity and fun, in late 2020, we started handcrafting our artisanal line of bath and body products with love in small batches using premium ingredients. As mothers with children who have eczema, we understand the challenges that come with bath time and finding products that support healthy skin. We strive to make bath time and self-care a calming and renewing experience for all!

2) We are two mommies: Gigi – Zuri’s Mom & Jenny – Emma’s Mom, sharing the same passion for creativity and fun. We started our soap-making journey in late 2020 when we first attempted to make our first soaps, knowing the benefits of having known and natural ingredients in our skincare products. Particularly, as we all wash our hands a lot more during the unprecedented time, keeping our skins moisturizing all time is extremely important. As we shared some of the soap designs on personal social media, we felt overwhelmed with the compliments we received from friends wanting to buy the soaps from us. We then sold over 70+ soaps (plus lipblams) during Christmas and donated all the proceeds for the first 50 sets to BC Children’s Hospital and Canadian Cancer Society. Soap making is addictive and fun, we could not stop us from creating and designing more soaps, in many cases, turning them into art pieces. Grateful, we immediately transformed our soap making hobby into a ‘small business’ and our page Zuri & Emma.

4) Is there anything else you would like to share:)

We share what we love. We all have a busy life, and it is important to find time to enjoy ourselves. Outside of our fulltime jobs (as well as doing mommies’ duties), we find our “me time” through creating as well as testing these lovely, glamming and cute products! We hope that you find your ME time as well through the use of our products at bath time.
